Basenji are small, unusual, elegant, athletic dogs about the size of a fox terrier, with a smooth shiny coat. The back is level; the legs are long, and the forehead is furrowed with wrinkles, giving it a worried look. This breed has a distinctive, horse-like running gait. The Basenji does not bark, but it does make a lot of unusual vocalizations including a yodel, howl, and grow.

Trainability: The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It is very intelligent, responds well to training and has a strong desire to please.
With Children: Basenji are usually patient, but they do best with older considerate children.
Other Pets: This dog does well with other canines but should not be trusted with non-canine pets.
Climate: This dog adapts well to all climates.
Indoor / Outdoor: The Basenji will do okay in an apartment, provided they get enough exercise. It is very active indoors and a small yard will do.
Exercise Required: The Basenji need vigorous daily exercise. They have a tendency to become fat and lazy unless the owner constantly exercise them.
Grooming Required: The Basenji washes itself like a cat and has no doggie smell, so very little grooming is needed. This is a good breed for people with allergies.
